Stimulants
If deemed safe, there are several options available, including methylphenidate-based medications (such as Ritalin and Concerta) and amphetamine-based medications (such as Adderall and Vyvanse).
Non-Stimulants
Non-stimulant options offer an alternative for those who may not tolerate or prefer not to use stimulant medications. Commonly prescribed non-stimulant medications are atomoxetine (Strattera) and Qelbree (viloxazine) which works by increasing the levels of norepinephrine in the brain. It helps improve attention, reduce impulsivity, and manage ADHD symptoms. Additionally, other non-stimulant medications, such as guanfacine (Intuniv) and clonidine (Kapvay), originally used to treat high blood pressure, have also shown effectiveness in managing ADHD symptoms.
"Off-Label" Medications
Off-label medications are drugs that are prescribed for a purpose other than what they were originally approved for by regulatory agencies. In the context of ADHD, this may include medications that are not specifically approved for treating ADHD but are used by healthcare providers based on clinical experience or emerging evidence to help manage symptoms.
